If you're struggling right now
Separation and family breakdown can push men to a very dark place. If you're in crisis — or just need to talk to someone — help is available right now.
Immediate help
Free, confidential, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You don't have to be suicidal to call — if you're struggling, they want to hear from you.
samaritans.org →The Campaign Against Living Miserably. Helpline open 5pm to midnight every day. Also offers webchat if you'd rather not speak.
thecalmzone.net →For young people under 35 who are having thoughts of suicide, and anyone concerned about them.
papyrus-uk.org →If contact has suddenly been blocked
Don't act in anger
It's natural to feel furious. But any action taken in anger — turning up unannounced, sending aggressive messages — can be used against you in court. Take a breath first.
Document everything immediately
Write down exactly what happened — when you were supposed to have contact, what was said, and by whom. Screenshot any messages. Start a diary from today.
Contact Families Need Fathers
Call their helpline on 0300 0300 363. They have volunteers who have been through exactly this and can give you practical, calm guidance on your next steps.
Seek urgent legal advice
If there is an existing court order being breached, speak to a solicitor as soon as possible. In serious cases, you may be able to apply for an urgent hearing.
Call Citizens Advice
If you can't afford a solicitor, Citizens Advice (0800 144 8848) can give you free guidance on your options and whether you might qualify for legal aid.
Your mental health matters
Men are far less likely to seek help when they're struggling — and far more likely to suffer in silence. If you're going through a separation, that silence can become dangerous.
Reaching out is not weakness. It's the most important thing you can do — for yourself, and for your child.
Dads Matter UK (dadsmatteruk.org) offers peer support from fathers who have been through separation and family breakdown. Sometimes talking to someone who truly understands makes all the difference.
In an emergency
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999. If you need urgent medical help but it's not a 999 emergency, call 111.
